What is a LED Segment Display?

The LED Segment Display is one of the types of LED displays, which use light-emitting diodes to provide illumination. LED Segment Displays, also known as LED Digit Display, are displays with a plurality of LEDs enclosed in fixed plastic components, and the components can be lit or not lit individually to show digit numbers.

What is a 16 Segment Display?

A 16 segment display (SISD) is one type of LED display, which is capable of producing light. A 16 segment display can be turned on to generate specific numbers, words, or graphic patterns. Due to the capacity of showing different kinds of graphs, 16 segment display is widely used to display digital information.

What are some Examples of 16 Segment Displays?

16 segment displays were created to display the complete Alphanumeric characters. For example, 16 segment displays are used to show Arabic numerals from 0 to 9, and the Latin Alphabets from A to Z, including uppercase and lowercase English letters.

Since the displays have more segments, 16 segment displays can represent more complicated letters than others. For instance, the sixteen segment display can also be used to display Thai numerals and Persian characters, which have higher complexity to show.

What are the Differences between 16 Segment Display, 7 Segment Display, and other Displays?

The LED segment displays were originally named by how many emitting areas they have. Besides, the light-emitting areas can also be called “segments” or “sections”. Take a 16 segment display for example, there are 16 segments in a single element.

Each light-emitting area has at least one LED in it. In addition, almost all displays have a circular emitting point at the lower right corner, and it is referred to as the Data Point or Decimal Point (DP). DP is sometimes presented as an additional segment, since it is commonly emitted as a comma, a decimal point, or a thousand-bit separator symbol.

The 7 segment display, as known as the numeric display, is often used to display Arabic numerals. The 7 internal segments are named as A to G segments in a clockwise manner. When all the segments are lit up, it seems like “8” in Arabic numerals.

On the other hand, the 16 segment display is an extension of the 7 segment display, consisting of six horizontal, four diagonal, and 6 vertical segments. The 16 segment display is designed to produce the complete English letters, including uppercase and lowercase English letters. Therefore, compared to the 7 segment display, it can display more details of Arabic numerals.

Other displays like 8, 9 , and 14 segment display can show more rounded digits than a 7 segment display. Because these displays have fewer bars, the prices are generally lower than a 16 segment display.
